ATT 2021 digital - Europe's largest fair for amateur astronomers goes online - May 8, 2021 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Dear astronomers,

the ATT (Astronomy and Technology Meeting) is a trade show especially for amateur astronomers, the largest event of its kind in Europe. After we had to cancel the ATT in 2020 due to Corona, we are planning a digital version on the Internet for this year. Even though an online fair will never be able to replace a face-to-face event, we want to try to transfer as much live character as possible into the ATT 2021 digital on May 8, 2021 from 10 am - 5 pm.

A planning team, which also includes well-known and long-standing ATT exhibitors, has been working on the implementation since January. Although not much can be seen on this website at the moment, work is being done diligently behind the scenes. Below you will find the current status of our planning.

Stage program

There will be presentations and discussions on several stages on May 8, some live and some pre-recorded. Zoom and YouTube are our technical platforms of choice.

During a 2-hour opening round from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., Essen's Lord Mayor Thomas Kufen and the former head of the Kennedy Space Center, James W. (Jim) Kennedy, will address greetings to the participants. With the keynote speaker Dr. Andreas Müller, astrophysicist and editor-in-chief of Sterne und Weltraum, we were able to win a renowned expert on the topic of "Black Holes". Under the direction of science journalist Daniel Fischer, Dr. Andreas Hänel (Dark Sky Initiative), Dr.-Ing. Detlef Koschny (ESA) and Stefan Seip (Photographer, Author) will discuss the effects of increasing light pollution.

Starting at 1 p.m., there will be four live expert presentations on a wide range of topics at hourly intervals:

  • Gernot Meiser: "Solar Eclipse Adventure and the World at Night".

  • Christoph Kaltseis: "New generation of CMOS-optimized Baader narrowband filters".

  • Benjamin Stöwe: "Spaceship Eberswalde

  • Jon Larsen: "Stardust in the City" (engl.)

A "look behind the scenes" is provided by the pre-recorded videos of Dr. Peter Heinrich, Dr. Andreas Müller, Daniel Nimmervoll, Markus Paul, Tim Ruster and Frank Sackenheim. In addition, Jessica Koch, Beatrix Woyth, Enrico Fruth and Jochen Pleßmann will present a "children's and youth program" with age-appropriate astro-information in the form of short videos.

Exhibitor fair

Almost 30 exhibitors have confirmed their participation so far (see ticker below). On virtual exhibition booths they present themselves and their products and/or services, among them many fair special offers. Some exhibitors offer the possibility to contact the booth staff directly via chat or video conference.

Marketplace for second-hand products

Who likes, can use the ATT 2021 digitally also, in order to separate from its old Astro treasures: Simply post the used goods for sale on eBay or eBay Classifieds in the run-up to May 8 and add the hashtag #att2021digital in the headline. From our website, interested buyers will be taken directly to an easy-to-read list of items that have been hashtagged. Voilá!

Miscellaneous in Bistro

Even live solar viewing, as visitors know it from the analog ATT, will be possible via YouTube stream. Furthermore, we are interested in an online survey to find out what amateur astronomers think about the abolition of the time change and whether they prefer permanent standard time or permanent daylight saving time. Last but not least, we plan to allow visitors to talk to each other via Zoom video: Arrange to meet astro friends in advance at a specific time at one of our virtual bistro tables and exchange ideas with them about the good old and even better new times!

So stay tuned for more. We are sure that you will once again take home lots of ideas and inspiration for your exciting hobby. Click in and see for yourself - see you at ATT 2021 digital (#att2021digital)!
